Period:  March 28^th, 2019 – end of year

Objectives: 

• To eliminate unneeded items from our work areas and warehouses
• To organize and label inventory and tools so they are easy to locate
• To improve safety conditions
• To have clean work spaces and machines
• To make cleaning and organization a daily habit so that the above conditions are maintained

Scope of 5S Targets:

• Manufacturing production
• Warehouse facilities
• Common areas

What are the 5S’s?

1. Sort

• Clearly distinguish between needed and unneeded items
• Dispose of the latter – when in doubt, throw it out!

2. Set in Order

• Arrange items so they are easy to locate
• Label them in terms of:
  1. What they are
  2. Where they go
  3. How Many should be there

3. Shine

• Keep everything swept and clean
• Find ways to prevent accumulation of dirt

4. Standardize

• Maintain the above 3 conditions long term
• Keep areas around the company consistent with each other

5. Sustain

• Instill the discipline necessary to keep procedures in place
• Begin weekly patrols and awards

People bathe to remove the dirt and sweat from their bodies.  Factories should do the same!  Our crusade is against the dirt and waste that we’ve allowed to accumulate around us.  Such waste can no longer be ignored or tolerated.  The 5S’s are a way to reduce waste and they are a bridge to other improvements.
